UPCOMING ART 10 35TH ANNIVERSARY
Art 10 Gallery is searching for former members, their families and friends to help celebrate the 35th anniversary of one of Canada's oldest artist-run galleries.
An open house, meet and greet, as well as pottery, jewelry, printmaking and painting demonstrations will be held on Saturday June 9th and Sunday June 10th.
"We've lost contact with some previous members and would love to reconnect with them and their families and invite them to our festivities," says Dorothy Sevcov, the only remaining member of the original ten artists who opened the gallery in 1983.
"Close to 125 artists have played a part in keeping the gallery thriving in our community. We know people have moved away, up and down the island, and would love the opportunity to say thank you," says Barbara Lorimer, who along with Dorothy, Mary Ann Fleming and Rod Corraini, are organizing the event.
Thirty-five years ago, it was a bold and new concept for Art 10 artists to open the first artist run gallery in Nanaimo.
Today, the gallery, located in the Nanaimo North Town Centre on Rutherford Road, continues to present original, local work and includes 25 members who create in many mediums. Former or previous guest members and their families and friends are invited to contact the gallery at 250 756-6136 or email the gallery at firstname.lastname@example.org
EUNMI CONACHER, Art 10 member, has recently been accepted to the AFCA signature membership of The Federation of Canadian Artists.
DOROTHY SEVCOV was given an award for her long volunteer service to the Federation Of Canadian Artists Nanaimo chapter.
Art 10 Gallery has been in its current venue, which is the center of Nanaimo North Town Center on Rutherford Road in Nanaimo, since February, 2010. The gallery is located at the crossroads of the mall near the lotto booth.
Art 10 is now looking for qualified artists to submit portfolios for consideration for membership.
In May 1983 Art 10 opened its doors at a location in Harbour Park Mall.
Earlier that year ten local artists got together with the idea of setting up their own gallery, the brainchild of Doris Paterson, who now lives on the Mainland. By the time the gallery opened in May there were thirteen members involved. Stell, the name Art 10, (for the founding 10 artists), stuck. Of the original thirteen, only Dorothy Sevcov still participants in the gallery. Since then approximately 50 other local artists have been members for a period of time.
Over the years Art 10 has spearheaded many exciting events. Well known artists such as Jack Shadbolt, Tony Onley and Herbert Siebner came to the gallery to instruct and show their work. Art 10 presented special shows at the Mahle House, Nanaimo Art Gallery and even one in Lethbridge, Alberta, as well as raising funds to Save Neck Point in 1994 and holding a silent auction to support the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust in its purchasing of park land around Mt. Benson in 2009.
Today there are 24 local painters and potters and jewellers involved in the gallery which is open seven days a week during Nanaimo North Town Center mall hours. A range of styles and subjects are represented in the paintings, and the potters provide customers with functional and fun pottery, plus sculptural pieces. Art cards, bookmarks, calendars, jewellry and other small gift items are also available.
After 33 years, Art 10 Gallery continues to provide a member-run exhibition and sales space for artists of mid Vancouver Island.
An artist who wishes to try for membership in Art 10 should come to the gallery for an information and application sheet. This requires the artist to bring in five original works which, if 2-D, are to be framed and which are to be left for two weeks for consideration. In addition a biography and photos of other works are encouraged. Responsibilities of members accepted for trial include three gallery sittings of four hours each per month, so prospective members should be aware of this and other responsibilities.
